about

I decided to release some of my old, old tracks which I have remixed and remastered. When I first made these in the 1990's I craved getting into a proper studio so I could really give them a professional sound. At the time I guess I lacked the confidence (or perhaps the sheer ruthlessness) of many of the artists I saw around who were doing the music that inspired me. I was really full of self-doubt that anything that I did was up to the standards of the dance music producers of the day, people like Photek, LTJ Bukem, Roni Size, Adam F and of course Goldie. I was also inspired by hip-hop, techno (especially Juan Atkins and Andy Weatherall's Sabres of Paradise) and the amazing collaborations between Talking Heads and Brian Eno.

More than 20 years on and the need for a once unobtainable fully kitted-out studio has been rectified by a free software package I got with a microphone interface run on a laptop. How technology has advanced! The kit that I made the tracks on is long gone and for the last track on this EP many of the sounds came from a borrowed keyboard thanks to David Spiers.

I also wish I could thank Mowgli again for his encouragement by giving me the confidence that my music was potentially good enough to be played alongside the aforementioned artists even though things didn't work out as I hoped. For many years after that I probably focussed too much on the missed opportunity and not the genuine faith I believe he had in me, even welcoming me into his home in Leeds with his partner Sue and their newborn child. But alas my outlook at the time was a lot more self-centred as is probably the case with a lot of young men. Much thanks to both Mowgli and Sue for inviting me to be a resident DJ at D.O.P.E. in Leeds.

And I also had the support of friends and family including my sister Emily and my friend Derek, who is in the light blue shirt in the cover picture, who came to my first time DJ'ing in Leeds.

This is all just ancient history now and I'm twice as old now as I was then but it was still part of what shaped me today.
