about

This track also includes my poem "Soundtracks of Our Lives". I decided to take it down to a slower tempo. The audio for the poem was chopped up and distributed through the track but the poem in its original form is included in the lyrics section.

Soundtracks of Our Lives

Michael Kiwanuka on the bus
Back to Peebles
“Home Again”

The world passes by and
The scenes shift.
I, the central character
One among many
Starring in our own biopics.

Are they comedies, tragedies
Or quirky art-house flicks,
Action packed or
Taking forever to get anywhere?

Audiences of one,
Isolated in a bubble of
Stereophonic sound.

Was this the intention
Of those whose invention
Led to this proliferation
And dissemination of
Sonic diversification?

These sound waves
Entering straight into your head
Can colour every sight and feeling,
Emotional responses enhanced,
The observer entranced,
But does it lead to anything
Apart from mental obfuscation?

Music lovers beware:
It is possible to have
Too much of a good thing.

Why not burst that bubble,
Get out there and listen
To the real sounds of life:
The voices of your fellow humans;
A beggar pleading for alms;
Migrating geese passing over
Ahead of colder weather,
Telling you to take cover,
Find shelter and cosy up
To a crackling fire.

Unplug those wires
Which although they can inspire
Can also lead to auditory loss
Of the subtle connections to
The world around us:

An equal source of inspiration profound
Through the elastic, airy medium of
Natural sound.
